At the last AGM and after considerable discussion it was agreed to redefine the Grades of Membership with the Institute, please see the new structure below:
Candidates are elected to the appropriate category of membership by the Council of the Institute on the recommendation of the Membership Committee.

Student members are those engaged on Institute courses or on courses which have been approved by the Institute.
Affiliate membership is open to any applicant and requires no formal qualifications.
Technician membership is open to those who have obtained an approved qualification at S/NVQ Level 2, or can provide proof of relevant technical expertise. Technicians may use the letters TIWSc.
Licentiate members are members who have passed the Institute’s Certificate course or an approved equivalent wood science or craft qualification at S/NVQ Level 3. They may use the letters LIWSc.
Member grade is awarded to those who have passed the Institute’s Diploma course or an approved wood science or craft qualification at S/NVQ Level 4, or has extensive experience in a timber related trade. Members may use the letters MIWSc.
A Fellow may be elected among members who have made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of wood science or technology, or have rendered distinguished services to the Institute. Fellows may use letters FIWSc.
Corporate membership demonstrates the commitment of companies working in wood and related industries to support the aims and objectives of the IWSc.
